Research
Based under Universiti Malaya, we champion research that encompasses biodiversity survey, soundscape research, and taxonomy and identification of flora. We are regularly frequented by local and international researchers as we have Malaysia's oldest university herbarium with a collection that started in the 1960s. To add, our botanical garden spans further than the trail leads which always open up more opportunities for researchers to discover more information on what species of animal and plants that we have. Our dedicated students from courses like Ecology Biodiversity, Geology, Chemistry, and more also uses our location as a research site for their classes and studies, bringing the research gap closer between students and environments.
Education
We started our journey in nature education with collaborations with Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) and various volunteers that will dedicate their time in bringing groups to the forest, sharing knowledge in the trees that we have and what they do. Now, we are frequented by different groups from kindergartens, to home-school groups, primary and secondary schools, to undergrads and postgrads students and staffs locally and internationally. Our guidewalks comprise of a walk in the botanical garden, conservatory of rare plants and orchids, and the exhibition hall. Ps: we also offer a visit to the herbarium if you are a researcher.
Conservation
What started as a rubber plantation has now been converted to a young secondary forest plant by plant since 50 years ago. With that, we do our best to take care of our plant collection and that includes working with volunteers to do gotong-royong where we do weeding, tree planting, and give fertiliser to the plants. This continuos and non-stop effort from the researchers, lecturers, staffs, students, and communities have brought up our species list in the garden to more than 1,600.
